Ornately Designed Copper-Nickel Pattern 5 Sen JAPAN. Copper-Nickel 5 Sen Pattern, Year 5 (1916). Osaka Mint. Yoshihito (Taisho). NGC MS-64. KM-Pn44; JNDA-01-38 (circulation strike); JC-09-38 (same); Jacobs/Vermeule-V119; Bank of Japan Collection-41. Variety without flower insets within cartouche surrounding central hole. A trial piece for a design that was adopted for general circulation the next year, this RARE pattern is the only of its type certified by NGC, with one additional example, an SPECIMEN-61, being certified by PCGS. The luminous surfaces provide a perfect canvas for the intricately interlaced design elements. It's interesting to note that the Norman Jacobs Collection, when it was dispersed in 2011, contained an example that was cataloged as only XF-AU, and which had visible streaks in the planchet. Given Jacobs' access to mid-Taisho era patterns during his presence in Japan in the 1940s, this suggests an inability to locate a better example in that day. In turn, it highlights the exceptional elusiveness of the present example in this lovely near-Gem quality. Estimate: $10,000 - $20,000.
