- 70.98 grains. A truly memorable example of this classic variety in the Massachusetts Bay Colony silver series. Warmly and attractively toned in dominant olive-gray and mauve, both sides reveal undertones of champagne-gold and powder blue iridescence as the coin dips into a light. The surfaces are remarkably smooth with no significant blemishes, just minor marks from brief commercial use that require magnification to discern. The planchet is irregular in shape due to clipping, the most prominent of these features centered just past 3 o'clock, at 5 o'clock and at 6:30 relative to the obverse. The letters MA in MASATHVSETS are largely off the flan, border into the tops of the letter N in IN and the first S in MASATHVSETS, but otherwise we note bold to sharp detail throughout. Subtle remnants of frosty luster enhance already strong eye appeal. A significant opportunity for the quality-conscious type collector or advanced Massachusetts silver enthusiast to acquire a technically superior and visually appealing Large Planchet Pine Tree shilling.<p>The iconic Noe-1 Pine Tree shilling is regarded as the quintessential type coin in the Massachusetts Bay Colony silver series. These pieces were the first struck for those British colonies that would eventually become part of the United States. They are also among the few American colonial issues struck in silver. Produced to an uncommonly high standard of quality, and relatively plentiful by Massachusetts silver standards, the Noe-1 Pine Tree is a perennial favorite among both colonial type collectors and series specialists. For the grade, it is difficult for us to imagine a more attractive and inviting specimen that that offered here. Worthy of a premium bid.
