- This type is discussed in Frossard's NUMISMA, Vol 5, No. 6 of November 1881, so it was known to numismatists by that time. Ford did not have a copper example; Syd Martin did, a PCGS AU-50 that brought $576 in our August 2023 Global Showcase Auction. This one is much nicer with blended steely-copper, autumn and golden-brown patina on both sides. The impression is well centered, if soft at the borders, with the central motifs sharp and crisp. The planchet is choice and round, surfaces a tad rough in areas, yet free of significant blemishes.
