- "1781" (1782) Libertas Americana Medal. Silver. By Augustin Dupre. Betts-615. MS-62 (PCGS). 839.52 grains. Deep navy blue toning with golden highlights graces reflective silver gray surfaces. A beautiful example of this American classic, far and away the most popular and recognizable of all American historical medals of the era. The surfaces retain most of their original liveliness, though they were undoubtedly polished long ago; some hairlines remain. A thin vertical scratch is noted behind Minerva's leg on the reverse, a few tiny pin scratches beneath the 4 in the obverse exergue are seen only under magnified scrutiny. Some old fingerprint traces, including one atop the obverse, blend with the toning. No heavy marks, perfect rims. The designs stand out boldly and in fine detail. Silver Libertas Americana medals are the creme de la creme of American historical medals, the most noble form of our most historic medal. True gems are extremely rare, and most specimens have seen some rough non-numismatic handling. This piece has been marvelously preserved and carries its remarkable history, tracing back to Franklin in Paris, regally.
