- A generally pewter gray example with a halo of warmer olive-russet patina engaging much of the obverse periphery. The strike is just a bit off center to 3 o'clock, the border denticles broader at left obverse and reverse, but this feature is of no consequence given the universally bold and well-balanced detail noted for the major design elements. Wispy hairlines and a few other light marks are evident in the obverse field areas, not at all unusual for a Draped Bust dollar certified as EF-40 or 45 by PCGS or NGC in today's market. In fact, this is a visually pleasing and above average example of the type, date and die pairing that will catch the eye of many bidders. BB Die State V.<p>Two 1795-dated obverse dies were paired with the Small Eagle reverse, the first of which placed Liberty's bust too far to the left. To correct this imbalance, the second die centers the bust with Liberty's topmost hair curl directly under the letter E in LIBERTY. The latter variety is BB-52, offered here, and it is scarcer than its BB-51 counterpart with only 475 to 800 coins believed extant in all grades (per Harry E. Salyards, 2022).
