- 1670-A French Colonies 5 Sols. Paris Mint. EF-40 (PCGS).
34.7 grains. Light silver gray with golden undertones and a hint of pale blue on the reverse. A sharp and attractive specimen of this first struck issue for Nouvelle France, including all French claims in Canada and the interior of North America, along with the French West Indies. Some very light hairlines are seen, nothing serious. The reverse is a bit weaker than obverse, as is typical, and a shallow area of planchet striations is noted at the right side of the cross. Tiny rim burr, as made, on obverse rim at 5 o'clock. While the 15 sols of 1670 is so rare as to be essentially non-collectible, and the copper 1670 double is unique, the 5 sols is both a classic scarcity and within the reach of a broader range of collectors. 1670 was a landmark year in the French-English relationship in North America: in May 1670, a partnership of French Canadian voyageurs and Boston businessmen received a Royal Charter for the Hudson's Bay Company from King Charles II.
PCGS# 158627.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection. Purchased from Anthony Terranova.
