- The Mint struck 800 Proof half dollars in 1859, at a time when it was just beginning to market these coins to a wider audience in response to the first boom in coin collecting in the United States. The coins were available as part of either the complete (including gold) or silver Proof Sets of the year, which were obtainable at the intrinsic value of the coins contained therein since the Mint did not begin charging a premium for Proofs until 1860. The sale price of the 1859 silver Proof set, therefore, was $2.02, which included $1.94 in face value for the coins it contained plus an extra eight cents for the non-subsidiary silver dollar, the intrinsic value of which was $1.08. A fair number of these sets remained unsold, however, the net distribution for the silver Proofs probably on the order of 500 to 600 pieces per denomination. An elegant specimen at the Choice Cameo grade level, this mostly untoned half dollar is fully struck with nice field to device contrast.
