- The Unique Proof 1834 O-104 Half Dollar
Ex Virgil Brand-Norweb Collection
1834 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-104. Unique as a Proof. Large Date, Small Letters. Proof-65 (NGC).
After 35 years, we are honored to once again be given the opportunity to present this numismatic treasure. Last offered by our firm in Bowers and Merena's November 1988 sale of the Norweb Collection, lot 3107, the coin was described therein as:
"A glittering gem specimen with full Proof surface on all areas, including within the shield stripes on the reverse. This piece is breathtakingly beautiful and is toned a delicate blend of muted rainbow colors, ranging from magenta at the center, to electric and gunmetal blue, to gold at the borders.
"Perhaps unique as a die variety; Walter Breen did not know of other examples, but he was aware of this one, as he participated in the sale of it to Mrs. Norweb.
"Here is a superb gem coin, a half dollar for the ages."
All Proof Capped Bust half dollars are rarities, regardless of date or die pairing, as these special coins were produced decades before the Mint began marketing Proof coinage on a wider scale in the late 1850s. Interestingly for such an elusive issue, the Proof 1834 is known in two distinct varieties: originals and the intriguing Crushed Lettered Edge restrikes produced in early 1836. The latter, while rare in their own right, are encountered more frequently. At least 10 are known, struck from six different die pairings: O-101; O-103; O-104; O-106; O-114; and O-122.
If the restrikes are rare, original Proof 1834 half dollars are exceedingly so. Five die pairings have been confirmed for this group - O-101, O-103, O-104, O-106 and O-114 - most of which are represented by a single specimen. Offered is the unique Proof 1834 Overton-104, a coin with an impressive provenance to match its breathtaking beauty and awesome rarity. It is sure to find its way into another world class numismatic cabinet, in which it will certainly figure as a leading highlight.
Provenance: Ex Virgil Brand Collection; New Netherlands Coin Company, November 1954; Mrs. R. Henry Norweb, Jr.; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Norweb Collection, Part III, November 1988, lot 3107; Superior's New York ANA Sale of August 2002, lot 1866, part of a complete assembled 1834 Proof set; Heritage's FUN Signature Auction of January 2011, lot 5332.
