- 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 40-b, W-5200. Rarity-5+. Narrow Shield, Sprig Above Plow, Llama Head. Fine-15. 132.7 grains. A more than respectable example of the so-called Llama Head type, named by cataloguer Tom Rinaldo as he likened the horse head more to a llama than to the Deer Heads with which this type was once lumped. Light olive brown surfaces are somewhat striated and very lightly porous, with some deeper marks at central reverse that might be planchet flaws or old hits--wear has obscured their origins. Generally well centered and with all design motifs and legends clearly visible, this piece is clearly overstruck on a Connecticut copper, with most of the word AUCTORI visible to the right of the shield. We have not noted an overstruck example of the 40-b in the past, though others might exist. The 40-b is always in demand and its rarity has remained generally stable at R-5+ for quite a while. The last two examples we offered brought in the $700-$800 area and were far inferior. We surmise this one will handily break the $1000 mark!
