- 1787 Massachusetts Half Cent. Ryder 2-A, W-5910. Rarity-4. VF-30 (PCGS). 65.2 grains. A hard, satiny example with a pleasingly smooth appearance in hand. There are no troublesome marks, although close inspection with a loupe reveals microscopic pitting that, although extensive, does little to detract. Well centered in strike, even through the denticulation is a bit soft around much of the reverse, all design elements are bold apart from the central high points, which display wear commensurate with the assigned grade. Dominant olive-copper patina to both sides, there is slight marbling of golden-brown on the obverse. Given that this die pairing of the 1787 Massachusetts half cent is challenging to locate in grades above EF, this handsome Choice VF represents excellent value for the astute buyer.
