- FROM THE FORMULA 1 COLLECTION. EX ELIASBERG WOW! One glance at this SUPERB GEM and you know it ranks as one of the FINEST 1911-D halves that exists! Described in the April 1997 Eliasberg catalog as follows: "MS67, Prooflike. Delicate champagne toning over prooflike surfaces. A possible PRESENTATION COIN of a quality we have not seen described in the literature, and quite possibly unknown...We believe this extraordinary specimen to be the finest known..." Noted authorities David Akers and David Lawrence both noted that most Mint State survivors are usually lack luster. This marvelous SUPERB GEM is the exact opposite of the typical survivor! The Eliasberg cataloger failed to make note of the awesome strike and how clean and free of any contact the surfaces are. It is thought that this coin was purchased by J.M. Clapp, directly from the Denver mint in 1911. Eliasberg purchased the entire Clapp estate in 1942. Lot 2124 in the April 1997 Eliasberg sale to John C. Hugon. Hugon Collection, 2005 FUN Auction, lot 4259; Greensboro Collection, Part VI, October 2015, lot 3312, where it realized $15,275. PCGS 3, NGC 1, CAC 2. Prior to this one selling, the Nagy-Friend-Garnder coin sold for $19,975 in October 2014. The only other MS67 sold in July 2003, and is now impounded in the High Desert Collection. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $16,500 and this coin is deserving of a home in the FINEST Barber half dollar set! We know this SUPERB 11-D will see fierce bidding! Cert. Number 6546417 PCGS # 6522
