- 1793 Liberty Cap Half Cent. Head Facing Left. C-2, B-2. Rarity-3. VF-20 (PCGS). With the reverse fraction 1/200 crowded between the ribbon ends and a long digit 7 in the date, the C-2 die marriage is readily identifiable for this piece. Very appealing in a mid grade early copper from the earliest years of the United States Mint, this VF is boldly defined throughout with no major design elements lost to circulation. Even dusky-brown patina, with no individually mentionable abrasions to the surfaces. We do, however, note several concentrations of planchet flaws (as made) at and near the borders on both sides, the most significant of which is present near the right reverse border through the letters in the word AMERICA.<br /> The historic 1793 is the first half cent struck in the United States Mint. While the issue introduces us to the Liberty Cap design type, the 1793 differs from all other issues of this type produced through 1797. The 1793 is the only Liberty Cap half cent with Liberty's portrait facing to the left, making it a one year design an example of which is required for completion of a type set of U.S. coins. And with an original mintage of just 35,334 pieces and a high rate of attrition suffered through circulation, competition is fierce for the few surviving examples.
