- FROM THE UNFORGETTABLE COLLECTION The Columbian Expo half dollar, struck in honor of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, which coincided with the 400th anniversary of Columbus's "discovery" of the New World. Between the two years, 1892 and 1893 this type was struck, over two million were produced. Many went to non-collectors and eventually found their way into circulation. While common enough in Mint State grades up to MS66, it is RARE in SUPERB grades. Incredible EVERYTHING! WOW oh WOW! This is a sensational Columbian Expo half! Tied for second HIGHEST graded at PCGS, there is just a single MS68 graded finer. This example is beautifully toned over semi-Prooflike reflective lustrous surfaces. WOW! Rose and lilac overtones grace the clear gold and antique silver coloration that define the surfaces on the obverse, while the reverse is mostly untoned with a hint of peripheral color that frames the intense brilliance of the centers. Razor sharp in strike, even the most minute details of the globe are fully rendered by an exacting blow from the dies. A strong glass reveals a tiny, insignificant tick or two, but nothing that distracts the eye or has any impact on the outstanding visual allure. All we can say is WOW! In fact, the surface quality is essentially identical to the MS68. PCGS 52, NGC 51, CAC 27. There are 14 in MS67+ at PCGS The most recent example sold in our October 2021 Regency Auction for $13,513. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $10,000 and we think this beautiful SUPERB GEM will easily exceed that level when the hammer falls. Good luck. Cert. Number 45402540 PCGS # 9296
