- Obv: William Barber's sailor Head design with a Liberty head facing left, an ornament and the word LIBERTY on her tiara, ribbon at the back of tightly coiffed hair, 13 stars around the border, and the date 1875 below. Rev: An eagle with spread wings in the style of that on the twenty-cent pieces of the era with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM inscribed in the field directly above and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon below. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the upper border, and the denomination TEN DOLLARS is at the lower border. The surfaces are highly attractive with reflective fields and lightly frosted motifs. Both sides glow in rich shades of copper-rose and reddish-brown with trace amounts of powder blue and antique gold. The strike is bold and all of Barber's tiniest details are plainly evident.
The uspatterns.com website notes: "[This is] William Barber's Sailor Head design. It was also used on 20-cents and half eagle patterns of 1875, dollar patterns of 1876, and in 1877 on dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar patterns." About a dozen examples of Judd-1444 in copper are known, a few of which have been gilted.
