- 1859 Liberty Quarter Eagle. Type II Reverse. MS-67 (NGC). A condition rarity that is unique as the finest graded 1859 Quarter Eagle of either type and alone in the MS-67 category according to both NGC and PCGS. The master reverse hub was changed during this period of Quarter Eagle production with the old style hub having arrows that nearly touch CA of AMERICA, the new hub has the arrows well back from these letters and showing more separation between the arrowheads. Bathed in dazzling luster, the fields of the obverse and reverse come alive when viewed under a light. Furthermore the strike is sharp, with all of Liberty's curls fully defined and rounded, the reverse die sharply defined the thigh and talons on the eagle, areas of notorious softness on this series (the new hub also addressed this strike-challenged area and resolved this issue going forward). Surface quality is nothing short of miraculous, as Quarter Eagles from this early period are virtually unobtainable at the Superb Gem grade with a mere handful of random dates certified at this level until 1890, when MS-67 survivors become more plentiful with two or three Superb Gems per year to the end of the series.
