- GREAT BRITAIN. Groat, ND (1499-1502). London Mint; mm: inverted anchor. Henry VII. PCGS AU-50.
S-2199A; N-1705c. Class IIId. Obverse: Crowned facing bust, within tressure of seven arcs; inward-facing lis on five cusps; Reverse: Long cross fourchee, with trefoil in each angle. Lightly circulated and attractive, plenty of detail and a bit of luster remains on this well struck example.
Born after his father had already died, Henry VII did not clearly succeed to the throne as most of his descendants did. The War of the Roses had been raging between the house of Lancaster and York for nearly a half century. Promoted by his mother as the legitimate inheritor of the throne, Henry VII led the decisive victory against the Yorkist faction in the Battle of Bosworth Field. This effectively ended the War of the Roses and firmly established Henry VII as King of England. After his victory, Henry sought to maintain peace and generate wealth for England. During this period a new opportunity arose in the form of colonization. Columbus sailed during the end of Henry’s reign, and England was exploring the New World shortly thereafter. In 1497, John Cabot claimed landed for the Crown, land later known as North America. This legacy of colonization would become the defining character in the rise of Britannia and was started by Henry VII. Henry sent reinforcements in a crusade against the Ottoman Turks, who had recently overrun Constantinople. Henry died in 1509, shortly before the events of the Protestant Reformation which would influence the direction of his son’s rule.
Estimate: $300 - $500.
