- 1847 Braided Hair Cent. N-10. Rarity-3+. MS-65 RB (PCGS).
This frosty Gem is sharply struck apart from trivial and not uncommon softness affecting the obverse stars. Plenty of deep rose-orange mint color remains, faded down somewhat with an overlay of gently mottled iridescent steel-brown patina. Scattered faint carbon spots are consistent with the assigned grade, the most prominent of which is at the curl at Liberty's forehead. In the 2021 edition of his Braided Hair cent attribution guide Bob Grellman reports only 10 Mint State examples of the 1847 N-10, and this is one of the "three with a significant amount of mint red remaining." He earlier described it as "MS67 and CC#1 by 4 points in the Noyes census...Our grade is MS65, CC#1 in the Grellman census" in his cataloging for the September 2009 Naftzger Collection, Part III sale.
Provenance: Ex Myles Z. Gerson; Denis W. Loring; Ken Goldman, July 1980; Ira & Larry Goldberg's sale of the Ted Naftzger Collection, Part III, September 2009 Pre-Long Beach Auction, lot 765. Lot tag, Naftzger envelope and J.R. Grellman tag with attribution and provenance notes included.
PCGS# 37290. NGC ID: 226D.
