- The certificate on official White House stock measures 14 inches x 12 inches and reads:
By virtue of the authority vested in me as President of the United States under the act of April 2, 1792, as amended, I hereby designate Irl C. Schoonover to serve as a member of The Annual Assay Commission for the year 1966 which will convene at The United States Mint in the city of Philadelphia
February 6, 1966
The White House
[signed] Lyndon B. Johnson
Both the certificate and case are in Extremely Fine or better condition with no significant blemishes apart from minor scuffing to the lid of the case.
According to the Julian-Keusch reference, the 1966 issue is unique in the Assay Commission medal series because its design does not include mention of the Mint, Philadelphia or the United States. It is very rare, as are most mid-20th century Assay medals. Syd Martin said it best about this offering: "Really a great set, and there can't be many like it." Indeed, we can only recall selling one other set, in November 2022, when the 1953 medal and Presidential appointment document of Commissioner Joseph M. Gazzam, Jr., signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, realized $15,600.
In addition to Schoonover, the 1966 Commission included numismatists Kenneth E. Bressett, Ambassador R. Henry Norweb and medal collector Emil Voigt.
(Total: 1 medal; 1 case; 1 certificate)
