- A wonderful early Proof rarity. Only a dozen were estimated to have been struck, and is a Low Rarity-7 as a Proof. The 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar is a very important KEY to the Capped Bust series. Only 1,200 or so were struck for circulation and these early Proof strikes are perhaps what is listed in the Judd book on patterns. The first of these were struck on November 8, 1836 and were the first coins struck on the new steam powered presses. Richly and deeply toned surfaces retain quite a bit of original reflection in the fields. The devices are chiseled sharp and stand out against the surrounding fields. A powerful glass fails to reveal any serious lines or marks of any kind and the eye appeal is great for a PR62. PCGS 2, NGC 0. This coin sold back in January 2015 for $24,675. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $32,500. Note more recently we sold a PCGS PR63 CAM CAC for $47,000 in 2017. This impressive coin is truly a notable and historic rarity worthy of an advanced collection. Good luck! Cert. Number 3958143 PCGS # 6223.00
