- O-101. WOW is this a RARE and underrated REDBOOK variety in MINT STATE! Clearly this coin is a real prize for the advanced Bust half collector! Frosty, lustrous surfaces have a wonderful underlying glow in the delicately toned surfaces. Nicely struck throughout, there is just a hint of natural weakness in the central portions of the design types. We note only a few stray scuffs, but none that are distracting to the design type. The surfaces are enhanced by a touch of the lightest gold and pewter tones. The Broken 3 is really the early die state of O-101. This is one of the few occasions that a die state represents an entirely separate listing in the Guide Book. The punch used to engrave the date was poorly produced, with the point where the two loops of the 3 separated at an odd angle. It was once theorized by Al Overton that a "lower half of a 2 was removed, and the lower half of [a] 3 cut in its place." As more numismatic scholars have researched the process, the understanding of how this variety was created has changed. Note that early on in production, the 3 was "Patched" and the O-101a Patched 3 variety (see next lot) was created. PCGS 3, NGC 0. There has never been a Mint State coin lower than MS64 graded by PCGS to sell in auction. The NGC records are all over a dozen years old and are irrelevant entirely. A non-CAC AU58 sold in the 2017 ANA for $7,638 and we sold the PCGS MS64 CAC Green-Newman-Konstantine Collection coin in September 2018 for $38,775. The current Collector's Universe value is listed at $12,500; only time will tell if that number is accurate! Good luck! Cert. Number 36059917 PCGS # 6132
