- THE GEORGE SCHWENK COLLECTION The 27-D nickel is a very desirable and difficult date to find in GEM grades, and is VERY RARE any finer. Thick satiny mint luster glows over the rich medium pewter-silver. A decent strike shows bold definition on both sides and the surfaces are nicely preserved and clean, free of any distracting marks or flecks. The eye appeal is exceptional for this date that often comes lack luster. PCGS 159, NGC 29, CAC 21. There are 77 in MS65+ and just 16 finer (thus we think there is much duplication at the MS65 and MS65+ levels in hopes of getting a higher grade). There have only been 11 appearances of a PCGS MS65+ CAC coin going back nearly a decade, selling for an average of $8,609. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $6,000 and it jumps to $23,500 in MS66. There is not a single SUPERB grade example known to either service, the finest graded at both PCGS and NGC is MS66+. This GEM is bound for another great collection of Buffalo nickels and will see stiff competition when it crosses the block. Good luck. Cert. Number 30673120 PCGS # 3961
