- 40.4 mm. 510.0 grains. Deep mahogany brown over both sides with a remarkable consistency in the patina. The Mint had problems with the bronzing process and these can be very unevenly patinated, often unattractively so. This one stands out nicely in this respect even taking into consideration the minor spotting on both sides. These areas seem stable and harmless beyond aesthetic considerations. Satiny and beautifully preserved, with virtually mark free surfaces.<p>A very historic issue from the early Mint, conceived and designed by Philadelphia Quaker Joseph Sansom, who himself was an accomplished silhouette artist. Sansom successfully petitioned James Madison to have John Reich cut his dies and the Mint strike his medals. This design, the last of four issued in his complete series, had been "intended" but was not yet ready for sale, as of December 14, 1807, so it was probably struck early in 1808. It was struck in commemoration of the Peace of 1783, the treaty that brought an end to the American Revolution and final acknowledged victory to a new nation.
