- Previously Unconfirmed 1740/30 Sou Marque from the Toulouse Mint 1740/39-M Sou Marque. Toulouse Mint. Vlack-144a. Rarity-8. AU-58 (PCGS). The only example of this overdate known to Breen when he published his Complete Encyclopediain 1988, and unconfirmed by Vlack when his reference on French billon coinage in the Americas went to print in 2004. This is a lovely example with light rose and olive toning to a base of pearl-gray. Nearly full silvering to both sides, which are sharply defined apart from where minor planchet striations interfere with the detail in isolated peripheral areas. Impressively smooth in hand with just a whisper of friction precluding a Mint State grade. Sharp, clear overdate. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
