- This is a great example of a very popular type that really should be considered a federally issued coin! The U.S. Assay Office of Gold essentially operated as a provisional U.S. mint from 1851 to 1853, first under the supervision of Moffat & Co. and Augustus Humbert, then under Curtis, Perry, and Ward after Moffat retired in early 1852. With their strong reputation, the U.S.A.O.G. churned out millions of coins, according to Kagin, from March 1853 to October 1853, about 2.5 million were struck; while the mintage was very large, many of these $20 gold pieces were returned to the mint and melted, then restruck into federal issued double eagles. This K-18 variety was struck from a large number of dies, which were destroyed during the Great Fire of 1906. There is no wear to be found anywhere on this LOVELY Mint State example. Sharply struck devices stand out, highlighted by a frosty glow and satiny sheen. Greenish-gold coloration mingles with hints of orange within the recesses of the devices. Scattered traces of ancient contact can be seen, mostly as small disruptions in the frost, they have minimal impact on the excellent eye appeal on this historic issue. Housed in an old NGC "fatty" holder. PCGS 37, NGC 55. There is a wide range of prices realized in auction for NGC-graded examples, from $13,200 to $18,000 and the current Collectors Universe value is listed at $19,500. This is a great looking example that should bring a premium bid for its freshness and its older holder. Good luck. Cert. Number 26372302 PCGS # 10013
