- 1834 Classic Head Half Eagle. HM-7. Rarity-3. Plain 4. AU-50 (PCGS).
This sharply struck example alternates between olive-gold and medium gold colors as the surfaces rotate under a light. With a remarkable lack of sizable abrasions for a Classic half eagle that saw light circulation, this first year example is sure to be of keen interest to gold type collectors.
Struck in the first year of William Kneass' new design type, the Classic Head issues spanned a period of six years. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM was removed from the reverse design and the weight drifted downward from 4.37 grams to 4.18 grams, thus eliminating the flow of gold coins to foreign coffers for a profit that occurred with the earlier quarter eagle design types of 1796 through 1834, especially in the 1810s and 1820s. Though struck only from 1834 to 1839 inclusively, the Classic Head quarter eagle series presents a fun collecting challenge.
