- PORTUGAL. 500 Reis (Cruzado), ND (1557-78). Sebastian I. NGC AU-58. Fr-41; Gomes-57.05. Weight: 3.77 gms. A decently struck example of the type with mostly readable legends. Struck under Dom Sebastião towards the end of the House of the Avis dynasty, a time of great distress in Portugal. His rule ended with a crushing defeat in the battle of Alcácer-Quibir (1578) during a crusade against Morocco. Sebastião perished in the battle along with most of the Portuguese nobility, and temporarily ended Portuguese independence. Estimate: $500 - $700. Click here for certification details from NGC.
