- 1870-CC Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. OC-1. Rarity-4-. EF-45 (PCGS). CAC.
The 1870-CC silver dollar is eagerly sought in all grades, yet seldom found with the attractive originality and problem free surfaces seen here, This impressive coin will appeal to discerning Carson City Mint enthusiasts and Liberty Seated collectors. Both sides are warmly toned in olive-gray over surfaces that exhibit lighter antique silver and powder blue undertones. Appreciable luster remains, as does plenty of bold striking detail. The first of only four Carson City Mint Liberty Seated silver dollars, the 1870-CC, with a mintage of 12,462 pieces, is also the most available in today's market. The novelty of these large silver coins with the CC mintmark resulted in a fair number of examples being set aside as keepsakes at the time of issue, as well as being plucked from circulation years later. In his outstanding new reference The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, Volume I(2020), Carson City Mint expert Rusty Goe estimates that 650 to 875 coins are extant in all grades. Most are well worn and grade no finer than VF. Even among Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated examples, dipped or impaired surfaces are the norm, rather the than the exception. Few Carson City Mint Liberty Seated dollars of any date are as attractively original and problem free as this highly desirable 1870-CC.
Provenance: From the Midnight Collection.
