- This is a very high end example for the assigned grade, a coin that in 1970 and 2002 was described as "About Uncirculated" and it is not hard to see why! The Condition Census listing shows a 65 followed by a 58, two in 55, and a 50. This is a "GEM" XF example, just below that listing. The O-112, T-20 die pairing brings together the blundered recut date obverse with the two leaf reverse style. Considered to be a Rarity-4 die pair, this is a very popular issue for the collector. The actual wear is quite minimal. Indeed, if the luster was just a little more pronounced, this coin would have likely graded AU at PCGS. The details are quite sharp, including the bold repunching at the date. Some light marks, commensurate with the amount of wear are noted on the obverse, hidden under a layer of deep, rich pewter-gray patina. The eye appeal is excellent! Ex Alto Collection, Stack's, December 1970, lot 786; David Queller; Queller Family Collection, Stack's, October 2002, lot 12; Sheridan Downey's Mail Bid 37, August 2013, lot 1; our consignor. PCGS 2, NGC 1, CAC 2. Similar in quality to the Dale Friend coin that brought $13,200 in August 2018. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $16,000 and the CAC CPG value is $17,200. We suspect this coin will see considerable bidding when it crosses the block. Cert. Number 50210583 PCGS # 6055
