- 1724 Wood's Hibernia Farthing. Martin 3.7-E.1, W-12610. Rarity-6. MS-63 BN (PCGS). 54.1 grains. A frosty golden-brown specimen with traces of mint orange in the protected areas, and with soft underlying luster that adds to the overall charm. Ted Craige's envelope called this piece: "Unc., Red," suggesting that at the time of purchase this specimen was mostly original mint orange throughout, or at least close enough to full orange that Craige conveyed as much in writing. The strike is fairly bold throughout, not full, but near enough to warrant mention. Low magnification reveals a series of raised die lines in the effigy's hair, as made, as well as a die crack that runs from the IA in GRATIA on a downward curve below REX and then across the tip of the effigy's bust to a point above the first G in GEORGIUS. An absolutely choice example of the date and grade combination, and of a rare variety as well.
