- An elusive and enigmatic type, the 2020 edition of the <em>Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins</em> provides only the following notation from W. Elliott Woodward's addendum to the 1864 McCoy sale: "Excessively rare. Seemingly, more than one was made." No example appears in our online archives going back to the early 2000s. The reverse is rotated approximately 80 degrees clockwise from coin alignment on this warmly toned autumn and golden-brown example. Obverse impression drawn to lower right and softly defined in that area, yet sharper elsewhere. The reverse is also drawn to lower right, sharpest at the digit 1 in the center, bold evidence of double striking. A bit subdued to help explain the basal Mint State grade from PCGS, yet free of all but minor carbon in isolated areas, and with some good gloss evident. This is a significant offering that will certainly command the respect of specialists.
