Within a few years of specie payments resuming in the East and Midwest after April 1876, the flood of previously hoarded coins returning to circulation meant that few new quarters were needed to meet the needs to commerce. Beginning in 1879 and continuing through 1890, the Philadelphia Mint's primary interest in the quarter dollar was in the production of Proofs for collector sale, along with limited circulation strike deliveries to prevent the former from becoming Proof-only dates. Richly and originally toned, this is a handsome and uncommonly well preserved Gem from the inaugural Proof issue in this interesting era of the Liberty Seated quarter series.
