- POLAND. Grand Duchy of Warsaw. 1/3 Taler, 1812-IB. NGC MS-64.
KM-C86. Frosty luster adorns the smooth fields with a few scattered haymarks as well as a couple adjustment marks within Friedrich August's portrait that prevent the coveted Gem grade. RARE in this quality.
Established in 1807, the Duchy of Warsaw was created by Napoleon I using Polish lands ceded by the Kingdom of Prussia after its defeat and the signing of the Treaties of Tilsit. King Friedrich August I of Saxony, who was a staunch ally of Napoleon was made its King. Upon Napoleon's defeat in 1815, the Duchy was dissolved, and the land was split between Prussia and Russia at the Congress of Vienna. Today, the lands once held by the Duchy include Poland as well as minor parts of Lithuania and Belarus.
Estimate: $800 - $1,200.
Provenance: From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II.
