A bright and beautiful example, showcasing original sunset-orange color with exceedingly clean fields typically found on the issue. Both sides are aglow with thick and frosty mint luster. Sharply struck and a delight to behold.<p>The mintage of the 1896-S double eagle amounted to 1,403,925 pieces, up more than 260,000 coins from the previous year's total at the San Francisco Mint. Much of the mintage was exported, repatriations in recent decades swelling the Mint State population to 10,000 to 16,000 or more examples. With a single higher graded 1896-S $20, the Eliasberg specimen, which may not be available at auction within a lifetime, the MS-65 is the next highest certified grade at PCGS. Considering the age and storage conditions of the Liberty Head double eagles had to endure, a high level of preservation seen on this example is nothing short of a miracle. Sure to catch the eye of the most competitive double eagle collectors.
