1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. PCGS graded AU-55.Choice glossy medium olive brown and chocolate. Underlying mint frost shows in the protected areas on both sides, especially on the reverse, and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The reverse looks close to mint state. The rims are completely free of the rim bruises that tend to plague these Chain Cents. The only notable marks are a dull nick on the throat and a few microscopic planchet chips in the middle of the neck (as struck). The planchet is not perfectly round, the diameter about a quarter millimeter wider from top to bottom than side to side. MDS, Breen state III, with die clashmarks on the obverse and a bulge at the top of the U in UNITED. This is the plate coin for the die state in the Breen encyclopedia. Graded EF45 Choice and CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #20042. Bland also says EF45. Our grade is EF45 Choice. A truly beautiful example of the first variety of large cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint, and it comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 58, 1 in 61.(PCGS # 35432) Value $200,000 - UP
