- 39.9 mm. 393.4 grains. A beautiful example of this popular portrait medal, struck years after William Penn's death in 1718 at the behest of his family, then the proprietors of Pennsylvania. Reflective and lustrous silver gray with abundant golden toning around the peripheries and splashes of iridescent violet and blue across the fields of both sides, the typical variegated color of a fine example of this type that spent generations in its box of issue. Some hairlines and handling marks are present, thin diagonal scratch in upper right obverse field, really lovely visual appeal on both sides. An especially handsome piece. The PCGS MS-62 Margolis specimen in silver brought $3,840 in our sale of April 2024.
