1907 Indian Eagle. Judd-1901, Pollock-1995. Rarity-3. Periods. Wire Rim. MS-66 (NGC). CAC. This is one of the toughest of&nbsp;the Saint-Gaudens issues--although it is technically a pattern--to find at the Gem or finer level. While the original mintage of 500 pieces is obviously quite low, enough of these did survive in lower grades for very serious collectors to obtain an example. The number reported in NGC's <em>Census </em>really drop off above the Gem grade, with this stellar MS-66 one of the finest seen. Notice the rich orange-gold luster that spans the obverse and reverse. The strike is bold throughout and all the expected finest and most minute die polishing lines are present in the fields, always seen on this prized issue. <br /> <br /> These Wire Rim pieces were the closest to Augustus Saint-Gaudens original design of the Indian ten dollar gold piece, with their rims slowing rising from the fields then abruptly changing over to the raised fin or wire rim that defines these rare pieces. While the effect of the high wire rim is dramatic, it was sadly, impractical and created ejection problems from the coining equipment. The merger of artistic design and the demands of high speed production coining presses seldom get along well. Here is one of those coins that came out of this brief union, with all the incredible beauty intact. Notice too, how the open fields exude satiny luster while the devices are bathed in a matching lustrous frost. Free of any copper specks and a visually striking example of this coveted coin.
