- 详细说明
- By the early 1850s, the cost of copper rose to the point where the large cent was no longer a viable coin, and the half cent had little use in commerce. Starting in 1850, and progressing to mid decade, the mint began experimenting with different sized planchets and different alloys. By 1856, they decided on the familiar diameter we still use today, but thicker and a copper/nickel alloy. A small number were struck in 1856 for VIPs. The total mintage is approximated at 1,500, many of the survivors are lower grade or impaired. Though scarce, GEMS are seen in auction a few times per year, and always bring strong prices when they do, especially when CAC approved.. This is a very HIGH END and fabulously preserved GEM 1856 Flying Eagle cent! Reflective fields have a shimmering, watery texture that flashes brilliantly on the obverse. Accents of pale pastel rainbow hues grace the natural orange-rose hue of the copper-nickel planchet on the obverse, while the reverse has a light overtone over the reflective surfaces. Both sides show razor sharp definition to the crisply rendered devices. A tiny tick or two on the reverse is the only thing we can see holding this back from an even loftier grade designation. Exceptionally bold eye appeal defines this beauty. PCGS 58, NGC 32, CAC 29. The most recent example sold in February 2022 for $30,000; prior to that sale, PCGS/CAC coins were selling in the $31,200 to $35,250 range. The current CAC CPG value is listed at $37,400 and the PCGS Price Guide value is $33,500. Fewer than a dozen have ever graded higher at PCGS, making this the highest grade generally available to collectors, and anything finer will be quite a bit more expensive, especially with CAC approval. Good luck. Cert. Number 40460207 PCGS # 2037
