- Magnificent Gem Proof 1862 Three-Cent Silver
Just Three Finer at PCGS
1862 Silver Three-Cent Piece. Proof-66+ Cameo (PCGS). CAC.
A lovely patina of golden-bronze and cobalt blue color accents this immaculate Cameo Proof. The motifs are blanketed in rich Mint frosting and delicately float among the watery, reflective fields on both sides. A green sticker from CAC surely confirms the superior quality. At the assigned grade level this is one of the very finest known, and would make a outstanding addition to any advanced collection.
The mintage figures for the Proof 1862 silver three-cent piece dropped almost by half from the previous year. Mint Director James Pollock decided to stop producing 1,000 Proof sets at the outset before orders from collectors appeared. According to the records, 550 Proof sets were produced, of which 430 sets were sold initially and a handful sold later on. Any unsold coins were either destroyed through melting or, more likely, disposed of by being released into circulation. The Proof trimes that were produced in 1862 were of very high quality and a number of Cameo examples are known. However, most are found in numeric grades of Proof-65 and lower, confirming the fleeting nature of this offering.
PCGS Population: 1; 3 finer in this category (proof-67+ Cameo finest).
CAC Population: 2; 3.
PCGS# 83711. NGC ID: 27C9.
