- 41.2 mm. 448.9 grains. Plain edge. Obverse D / Reverse C. Two decades ago, we described this medal as:
Mottled medium brown with lively reflective surfaces showing golden, violet, and blue undertones. Traces of mint color persist around some letters. A spot of surface corrosion is noted under A of MAGNUS, three smaller ones under NIS of CHRISTIANISSIMUS, excellent eye appeal with only the most minor contact points. First struck in 1686, this piece could have been struck anytime before 1842 but was likely a late 18th century production. This piece is an earlier die state that the silver piece included in the LaRiviere collection, showing a less advanced reverse rim break at 4:00. A scarce and popular medal.
The rim cud on the reverse is vastly smaller here than in all of the Obverse A pairings in this collection. The planchet is also better made, with none of the inherent roughness seen on the others. There are valuable lessons regarding Paris Mint processes and placement on the time continuum that can be gleaned from a large enough sample of such comparisons. An attractive example that has been off the market for 20 years.
