This is the best produced of the three die marriages known for the Proof 1861 Indian cent, an issue that is plagued by poor planchet stock, soft strikes and other as-made anomalies. Here, however, we note universally sharp detail and smooth, distraction-free surfaces. Generally medium tan-gold in color, wisps of playful powder blue and pinkish-apricot iridescence flash into view as the coin rotates under a light. Rare with such superior striking quality and surface preservation.
