- The first of three Proof-only issues in the nickel three-cent series, the 1877 reflects greatly reduced demand for this denomination in circulation as the nation recovered from the Civil War and moved past the Reconstruction era. Collector demand remained strong, however, as evidenced by John W. Dannreuther's (2023) estimate of 1,100 Proofs struck as opposed to the traditional figure of 510+ pieces published in the <em>Guide Book</em>. Since the 1877 Shield nickel is also a Proof-only affair, contemporary numismatists had to order the three-piece minor Proof sets to get these coins, requiring a generous mintage to fill orders. Yet with only 900 or so specimens believed extant, and no corresponding circulation strikes, the 1877 as a date is the rarest in the nickel three-cent series. Offered is a lovely Gem Cameo Proof with pretty iridescent toning in silver-apricot on nicely contrasted surfaces. An ideal candidate for inclusion in a high grade nickel three-cent set.
