- Only 4,520 circulation strike quarter eagles were minted in 1870, and of these perhaps no more than 30 to 40 Uncirculated survivors can be accounted for in all of numismatics. This is one first offering for a Mint State example since 2015, and the finest we can ever recall handling after the fabulous Harry W. Bass, Jr. specimen that realized $19,550 in our 1999 Bass II sale as PCGS MS-65. Semi-reflective in the fields, both sides also have a soft satin texture to smartly impressed motifs. With wisps of pinkish-rose to dominant deep orange-gold color, this is a handsome BU example whose offering represents a fleeting opportunity for astute Liberty Head gold enthusiasts.
