With an extraordinary (for the era) mintage of 119 million coins, the circulation strike 1936 was produced in greater numbers than any other Buffalo nickel issue. The need to produce this many coins as quickly and efficiently as possible meant that the Mint allowed many dies to remain in the press beyond when they were capable of producing a high-quality product. Yet while many 1936 nickels range from poor to average in terms of striking quality, there are enough Mint State coins extant that the collector can afford to be patient until a fully defined example comes along.
