- 1835 Matron Head Cent. N-1. Rarity-1. Large 8 and Stars. MS-63 BN (PCGS).
A rich and even patina of coffee-brown paints each side of this beautiful Choice specimen. The luster is uniform and satiny across the fields, framing more frosted design elements. Only trivial marks are visible under magnification, and none of these are individually notable. Slightly aligned towards 6 o'clock on the obverse and nicely centered on the obverse. The peripheries demonstrate the usual cracks representative of Noyes Die State C/D. This is the second use for both dies. The obverse was earlier used for the N-9, while the first pairing of the reverse die was to strike 1831 N-3. Interestingly, this reverse was used to make coins bearing three different years, 1831, 1835 and 1834, in that order.
Provenance: From the Paradise Collection. Earlier ex Pete Miller; Larry Whitlow, June 17, 2010; Ira and Larry Goldberg's sale of the Gene Heard Collection, June 2017, lot 332.
PCGS Population (N-1 variety only): 4; 1 finer.
PCGS# 37105. NGC ID: 225S.
