- Ready To Retire Collection. The Carson City mint was closed for most of 1889 (and for several years prior), so mintage of silver dollars was limited to only a three month's worth of emission, helping to explain the undisputed key-date status of the 1889-CC. This and the heavy attrition, apparently at the melting pot, suggests why so few exist in mint-state today. Of course, this is not to claim that the grade assigned by PCGS as AU-58-plus qualifies as "mint-state", but it is impossible under today's grading scheme to get any nearer truly uncirculated status. And a true slider can often be prettier and more desirable than, for example, "MS-61".
That the coin "looks unc" is nearly an obvious statement, since the slightly flashy aspect and seemingly unworn highpoints seem to qualify as such. The slightest touch of greyish friction in the fields shows up really only under certain viewing angles. Reflective fields, as suggested, border upon semi-prooflike, although it's surprising how many 1889-CC dollars approach (or achieve) prooflike status. Molten amber-gold flows over the coin and gathers density toward the rims, especially on reverse. As a low-mintage emission, the strike was rendered with exceptional accuracy, including fully split of strands above ear, and full segmentation of the eagle's talons, which are almost perfectly defined.
