- 50.9 mm. 819.1 grains. Plain edge. Choice chocolate brown with reflective fields yielding pastel gold, blue and rose highlights. Beautifully detailed and soundly struck, though the double striking on the reverse is spread enough to show remnants of an earlier strike outside of the die edge at upper right. Aside from some spotting in the left obverse field, this piece is free of noteworthy defects. This is struck from a second, replacement obverse die, different from the Ford-Foster silver original but identical to the LaRiviere bronze (1880-1898), the Norweb bronze (1860-1879), and others seen. As we noted in 2012, the reverse die on this piece is the original reverse, seen on restrikes throughout the 19th century but also the plain edge originals. This is the only example of a plain edge Dampville medal we've offered since the 2006 Ford sale. It's a lovely one.
