Ex Parsons-Ryder-Boyd Maris 28-L
1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 28-L, W-5065. Rarity-3. Outlined Shield. EF-45 (PCGS).
149.9 grains. Called "Condition Census" in the Frontenac Sale, this coin is easily the equivalent of the litany of EFs listed in the Siboni-Howes-Ish census. It is well centered on a glossy light tan and olive brown flan, with four ruddy-brown toning areas near horse's neck and around date. A higher grade specimen than this will not come with much more detail than this EF, for obverse 28 is very flatly rendered in the die and is not the sculptural tour-de-force that are the date under plowbeam dies. There is a decided simplicity in the design details that lends a certain charm to this die combination, which is one of our favorites in the series. High grade and great provenance combine to make this an ideal specimen for the collection of an advanced New Jersey die variety or Colonial type collector.
Provenance: From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. Earlier ex Henry Chapman's sale of the George M. Parsons Collection, June 1914; Hillyer Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford; Bowers & Merena's Frontenac Sale, November 1991, lot 147.
