- 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 31-L, W-5095. Rarity-3. Shattered Die, Outlined Shield. EF-45 (PCGS). 144.7 grains. Nicely blended light and medium brown over smooth, glossy surfaces. Denticles frame the top of the obverse, and the sharpness is strong on both sides. Some little reverse rim nicks are seen, and the obverse shows some minor obverse scratches, including a horizontal one between NO of NOVA. While the PCGS holder calls this "Shattered Die," based upon the variety descriptor in the SHI book, this example is actually the elusive Die State I, with no breaks visible. While many examples from these dies show a rather spectacular obverse failure, this piece makes for an interesting counterpoint. Provenance: From the E Pluribus Unum Collection. PCGS# 767900.
