- 42 mm. 595.9 grains. Plain edge. Rich chocolate brown with some subtle lilac and deep blue tones amidst the fine Paris Mint bronzing. Extremely well detailed and attractive, only minor evidence of handling. A circular area under Louis' chin shows minor discoloration, and a handful of very minor marks are noted in the fields, more on reverse than obverse. The diagonal linear defect in the lower left reverse field is a hallmark of this original die. Scarce and popular, this variety is historically important as an official French recognition of the end of the American Revolution. After selling none since 2015 and only three since 2010, we have offered a little flurry of these in the last year, including two graded MS-63 BN (PCGS) at $2,880 and $1,560.
