- This is a breathtakingly beautiful Gem Proof with a bright complexion of even medium orange-gold color on both sides. The fields are icy and reflective, starkly contrasting the satiny design elements. Under close inspection with a loupe the former also reveal the orange peel texture characteristic of U.S. Mint Proof gold coins of this era. A result of overheated planchets, not the die preparation process, this curious, yet attractive and desirable attribute is occasionally seen on Proofs and circulation strikes in both gold and other metallic compositions; it is not exclusive to Proof Liberty Head gold, as once thought. Sharply struck and free from notable imperfections under even under careful scrutiny with a loupe.<p>The 1898 has a respectable mintage of 165 pieces that ranks among the highest in the Proof Liberty Head quarter eagle series. With approximately 100 coins believed extant, this is one of the more frequently offered Proof gold coins of its type in today's market. On the other hand, no classic numismatic coin with little more than 100 pieces known can rightly be called common in an absolute sense. Indeed, the 1898 is as rare and desirable as is warranted for an issue that is part of the United States Mint's classic Proof gold series. This particular piece is certainly among the finest examples known for the issue. It is a true connoisseur's coin that is worthy of the strongest bids.
